RE-FASHION Costume Change and Exchange Recycling Event

SATURDAY, AUGUST 18, 2007
11:00 am to 3:00 pm
Humanist Hall, Oakland
390 27th St, between Telegraph and Broadway

Does your alter ego need a makeover? Is your costume closet filled with treasures you haven’t been wearing? Got an unfinished wearable art project that needs a little push of inspiration? RE-FASHION is the solution!

RE-FASHION is a costume swap and modification event. Bring a bag or more of your unwanted costumes, finery, accessories, and notions, and something to hold your takeaways. Please, no underwear or swimwear. There will be a suggested donation, but the focus is recycling, and nobody will be turned away for lack of funds.

The swap begins with a giant collective pile of clothing, the unwanted costumes of all who attend. Everyone is welcome to dive in and find their next new, used items from the pile. Take as little or as much clothing from this pile as you like.

We’ll provide transformation stations, where you can cut, sew, glue, paint, bedazzle, and otherwise renew and combine someone else's rags into your riches.

There will be an outdoor area, where you can supervise your children as they play, and where children’s items will be swapped.

If you’d like to:
volunteer for the event
bring your sewing machine to the event for others to use
help run a transformation station
lead a workshop on modifying clothing
or provide an activity for children

or if you just need more information…

please email refashion2007@gmail.com

Hello everyone!

I'm moving to Berkeley next week from San Diego and need some crafty help! Does anyone know of any crafting groups, communities, etc?

I'm into knitting, sewing and other miscellaneous crafting activities. I'm also looking for good resources for art classes. I would like to start painting and would love to know of some places I can go to.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks!

In the spirit of collaborative art and making life more fun for my loved ones (that I haven't met yet) that are getting chemo, I intend to participate in this event. I would love it if some of you came also, seems like about 5 of my firends are going to come, Burners as well as one of my business colleagues. I don't know whether I will attending as a knitter/crocheter or decorator since I haven't done any crochetting or knitting for 25 years but I may buy some needles this weekend, hats are pretty basic.

Would love to have any or all of you join me.

"Chemo Caps & Other Head Huggers for Cancer Patients
Join Craft Gym for an evening of crafting as we make caps and other head huggers for cancer patients currently undergoing chemotherapy and other treatments. You can make a difference whether you are a first timer or you have experience sewing, knitting, or crocheting. Free cap patterns and sewing machines will be provided.* Please bring the following sewing, knitting, crochet, or other project materials as a donation:

Sewers: 1 yard of polar fleece

Knitters & Crocheters: 1 skein of soft yarn (100% Cotton, 100% Acrylic like Lion Brand’s MICRO-SPUN, or other machine washable fibers. No animal fibers please! Some people have allergies.)

Novices/Beginners: A few skeins of embroidery floss (or ribbons, buttons, appliqués, beads, etc). Craft Gym will provide pre-made caps that you are welcome to embellish.

And, feel free to use the material you bring or swap with other Chemo Cap makers. All finished pieces will be donated in hospital oncology units and hospices in the Bay Area.

When: Thurs, March 3, 2005
6:30-9:30 pm

Where: Daniel Webster Elementary School, Classroom 21
465 Missouri St, San Francisco 94107

Please RSVP to let us know you are coming.

** Special Note to Knitters/Crocheters: Please remember to bring a set of needles or hooks to make sure we have enough for everyone! "

Great book for all fiber people!

While this book is called Spinning Designer Yarns, it is about so much more. The author Diane Varney takes you through the entire fiber process in moderate detail and she is speaking to dyers, weavers, spinners and knitters/crocheters. I was really impressed with her experience and information. I am not a weaver yet, but I was very interested to know the different ways that handspun yarn can be used for spinning and the caution and advise she gives. At first I was a bit frustrated with the book because it is called spinning designer yarns and it doesn't talk about the actual yarn proccess until page 54, but as I read on I was just absorbed in the book. I can't rave about it enough, but I do think the title should be rethought.

It's just getting started, so I'd love some members who like this kind of thing!

Want to teach crochet?

Hi all,

I was at Michael's in Emeryville last night, and the cashier said that they're desperately looking for a crochet teacher. The commitment is one class one or two nights per week. It pays, but I don't know how much.

Or -- if you prefer not to get paid :) -- I teach a crochet club in an afterschool program at a middle school in North Oakland. It's just 3:30-5:00 on Wednesdays. I've got 21 kids this semester and, well, that's an awful lot for one adult -- especially since crochet is best taught one-on-one. The kids LOVE crocheting -- and anyone who will help them with it. It's a really positive experience. So if this sounds like fun to you, I would love your help! Just send me a msg. Doesn't matter how well you can crochet.

Thanks!

So what kind of crafty ladies do we have here?

I bead,
sew okay,
can knit scarves (can't read patterns yet though,)
scrapbook and make cards,
cross stitch a little bit (but tend to loose patience halfway through),
have experimented with leatherworking,
have taken a pottery class or two,
Soap making, Candle making, home made cosmetics,
etc...

I suppose I dabble in everything but not quite an expert in anything quite yet. So what do you Bay Area girls do?

The Knitters' TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

'Twas the night before Christmas and all around me
Was unfinished knitting not under the tree.

The stockings weren't hung by the chimney with care
'cause the heels and the toes had not a stitch there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds
but I had not finished the caps for their heads.

Dad was asleep; he was no help at all,
And the sweater for him was six inches too small.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I put down my needles to see what was the matter.

Away to the window, I flew like a flash,
Tripped over my yarn and fell down with a crash.

The tangle of yarn that lay deep as the snow
Reminded me how much I still had to go.

Out on my lawn, I heard such a noise,
I thought it would wake both dad and the boys.

And though I was tired,my brain was a bit thick,
I knew in a moment,it must be Saint Nick.

But what I heard then left me perplexed-ed,
For not a name I heard was what I had expected

"move,Ashford; move,Lopi; move,Addie and Clover
Move,Reynolds; move,Starmore; move, Fraylic--move over"

"Paton, don't circle round; stand in line.
Come now, you sheep wool work just fine!

I know this is hard semi, it's just your first year,
I'd hate to go back to eight tiny reindeer."

I peered over the sill; what I saw was amazing,
Eight woolly sheep on my lawn all a'grazing.

And then,in a twinkle, I heard at the door
Santa's feet coming across the porch floor.

I rose from my knees and got back on my feet,
And as I turned round, Saint Nick, I did meet.

He was dressed all in wool from his head to his toe
And his clothes were handknit from above to below.

A bright Fairisle sweater he wore on his back,
and his toys were all stuffed in an Aran knit sack.

His cap was a wonder of bobbles and lace,
A beautiful frame for his rosy red face.

The scarf round his neck could have stretched for a mile,
And the socks peeking over his boots were Argyle.

The back of his mittens bore an intricate cable,
And suddenly on one I spied a small label.

SC was duplicate stitched on the cuff,
and I asked "Hey Nick, did you knit all this stuff?"

He proudly replied "Ho-ho-ho, yes I did,
I learned how to knit when I was a kid."

He was chubby and plump, a quite well-dressed old man,
And I laughed to myself for I'd thought up a plan,.

I flashed him a grin and jumped up in the air,
And the next thing he knew he was tied to a chair.

He spoke not a word, but looked in his lap
Where I'd laid my needles and yarn for a cap.

He quickly began knitting, first one cap then two;
For the first time I thought I'd really get through.

He put heels on the stockings and toes in some socks
While I sat back drinking Scotch on the rocks!!

So quickly like magic, his needles they flew,
That he was all finished by quarter to two.

He sprang for his sleigh when I let him go free,
And over his shoulder he looked back at me.

And I heard him exclaim as he sailed past the moon
"Next year start your knitting sometime around June!
